Leading Swiss medicine for children

University Children’s Hospital Zurich – World-class paediatrics in a unique healing environment

At its new and pioneering location, the University Children’s Hospital Zurich combines clinical excellence with innovative research, international standing – and an environment in which children and families feel safe and secure.

University Children’s Hospital Zurich

If a child becomes seriously ill, they need a place that combines first-rate medical treatment with a human connection. The University Children’s Hospital Zurich is the largest paediatric hospital in Switzerland and one of the world’s leading centres. At its new campus, it sets pioneering standards in treating and caring for young patients from both Switzerland and abroad.

A comprehensive centre for paediatrics
The Children’s Hospital moved into its state-of-the-art new building in the autumn of 2024. Two buildings – an acute care hospital and a research and teaching centre – are situated opposite each other, and together form a unique comprehensive centre for paediatric medicine. The architecture creates light, calm and clarity; family-friendly single rooms with parents’ beds allow for closeness, even in difficult times. The modern infrastructure and digital processes improve the quality of medical care and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration in the daily clinical practice.

Research that makes a difference
Innovative treatments come into being when science and clinical practice work hand in hand. At the Children’s Hospital Zurich, this degree of proximity is physically palpable: at the purpose-built research centre, biologists, medical teams and data analysts work closely together. The focus is on areas such as neurodevelopment, immuno-oncology,
and regenerative medicine – topics that are also of key importance for rare or genetic diseases. Research findings flow directly into the care, allowing for personalised treatments which are based on the latest findings.

EEG and neurosurgery
The Children’s Hospital Zurich has the largest epilepsy programme for children in Switzerland. High-tech procedures such as stereo EEG, robot-assisted laser ablation and minimally invasive surgeries allow for precise intervention. The range of treatments is complemented by comprehensive neurosurgical expertise – in rare vascular diseases of the brain such as Moyamoya syndrome, for example.

Oncology and neuro-oncology
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Paediatric Oncology supports children with cancer and brain tumours throughout their treatment. Precision medicine makes it possible to identify the active agents which are promising for each individual child. International study opportunities and collaborations with proton therapy centres open up additional opportunities.

Stem cell transplantation
The largest paediatric stem cell transplant programme in Switzerland is one of the safest in Europe. Around 35 allogeneic transplants are performed annually – with the use of particularly gentle methods which reduce the risk of complications.

Fetal Surgery
Even before birth, certain congenital conditions can be treated in the womb. In this highly specialised field, the Children’s Hospital Zurich ranks among the world’s leading centres.

Visceral and Thoracic Surgery
The Children’s Hospital offers highly specialised expertise in visceral and thoracic surgery. Its modern, interdisciplinary approach treats malformations, tumours and developmental disorders in patients ranging from newborns to adolescents. The goal is always to deliver optimal treatment that sustainably improves each child’s quality of life.

Personal support for international families
The Children’s Hospital’s International Office provides support to families from abroad from initial contact to followup care. The team assists with visas, appointment scheduling, translation services (including Arabic), and finding suitable accommodation near the clinic. Cultural or religious needs are also taken into account – with the consistent goal
of making each stay as pleasant and wellorganised as possible.
