Globally renowned cardiac surgeon Professor David Barron will lead the integration of our paediatric cardiac surgical programmes at Evelina London Children’s Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) to create a single centre of excellence at Evelina London.
Under Professor Barron’s leadership, the paediatric cardiology and cardiac teams from RBH and Evelina London will unite to create one of the most comprehensive cardiology and cardiac programmes in the UK and worldwide.
Professor Barron joined Evelina London in January 2025 as Chief of Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. As well as bringing his considerable expertise in complex heart defects, he has also steered Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), which is among the top 5 surgical programmes in North America, to the highest quality outcomes in its history.
Over the course of 2026, our two centres of excellence will be on one site at Evelina London, situated next to St Thomas’ Hospital in central London. Royal Brompton is ranked consistently among the world’s top specialist heart hospitals.

Leading innovation and expertise
Evelina London handles around 6,000 cardiology patients and over 500 congenital heart operations annually. It stands out for pioneering fetal and cardiac MRI (including 3D/VR diagnostics), advanced imaging, and complex neonatal operations. Advances in cardiac imaging can shorten patient waiting times and reduce the need for multiple surgeries, thereby improving patient outcomes.
Evelina London’s extensive range of congenital cardiac surgeries, including newer techniques for highly complex congenital heart problems for both single-ventricle palliation and complex biventricular corrective surgery, delivers excellent outcomes.
As for Royal Brompton, it excels in surgical and catheter interventions and seamless care transition through Europe’s largest Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) unit.
In addition to fetal cardiology, paediatric cardiology, and cardiac surgery, both Royal Brompton and Evelina London have specialised intensive care, cardiac electrophysiology, and inherited heart-disease services, making them internationally renowned centres for diagnosis, innovative procedures, and long-term management of congenital and acquired heart conditions. Evelina London and our academic partner, King’s College London, are noted for advanced 3D imaging and printing, which supports complex cardiac surgery planning.
