Sixth edition of the Advanced Medicine Congress explores trends and developments in general medicine

Dr Mohammed Iqbal, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, Abu Dhabi

Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), Abu Dhabi, a Mubadala Health partner, in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians, hosted the sixth edition of the Advanced Medicine Congress (AMC) on June 21. Accredited by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the virtual event brought together prominent medical experts to discuss recent trends and developments in general medicine, covering a variety of topics from: multimorbidity and frailty, managing dysglycaemia during acute illness and updates to nutritional regimes.

Presented by Dr Mohammed Iqbal, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), Abu Dhabi, and chaired by Dr. Omar Mustafa, Consultant Physician in Diabetes and General Internal Medicine, Royal College of Physicians, UK, the successful event featured globally renowned specialists from the Imperial College London, Royal College of Physicians, Kings College London, University of Surrey, and St Mark’s Hospital.

One of the leading topics of discussion centred on multimorbidity and frailty, a topic explored by Professor Alan Sinclair, visiting Professor in Diabetes Care, and Dr Laura-Jane Smith, Consultant respiratory physician, both from King’s College, London.

Comorbidity

Separately the two speakers explored the influence on older people with Type 2 diabetes, the application in a clinical setting, the disease trajectories and treatable traits. The key takeaway from Professor Sinclair was that: “There is still a lot of research in this area of diabetes, but the main thing is to recognize that comorbidity and frailty are not synonymous and must be tackled separately.”

A similar topic that garnered interest was presented by Professor Amir Sam, Head of Imperial College School of Medicine, Imperial College London, UK, who spoke on Covid-19 and the endocrine system. He took the audience through how the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects a patient, which organs in the endocrine system are susceptible to its effects, and some of the treatments and outcomes.

He also addressed the treatment of COVID-19 for dehydration with IV fluids (serum sodium) and highlighted the risk of pulmonary oedema. In closing, he noted that the recorded ongoing fatigue associated with the virus “cannot, so far, be blamed on the endocrine system”.

Open to general and specialist physicians in the UAE and abroad, the AMC event provided an opportunity for the wider medical community to engage with world-leading experts and saw 435 virtual guests in attendance.
