Our private patient service is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which includes two of the safest and most prestigious of the UK’s teaching hospitals offering private patients outstanding clinical care from world-class consultants. We offer a full range of specialist services for renal failure patients, including complex transplant cases, living donor adult and paediatric transplants, pancreatic transplants, vascular/dialysis access procedures and haemodialysis services for UK and overseas patients.

Situated in central London, our renal service is based at Guy’s Hospital and paediatrics from Evelina London Children’s Hospital, close to famous London landmarks such as the Tower of London, Houses of Parliament and the River Thames.

A proud history of innovation
As one of the world’s most extensive renal transplant programmes and paediatric transplant units, we have a long history of innovation. Our renal service has been a leader in kidney care since the 1970s, pioneering minimally invasive techniques and managing surgically and immunologically complicated cases.

Enhancing our global reputation is an active research programme that keeps us at the vanguard of clinical research and developing new technologies and therapeutic interventions for the benefit of all patients.

Our achievements

  • Guy’s and St Thomas’ pioneered robotic technology in the UK
  • Our transplant surgeons were the first in the world to use 3D printing to support an adult donor kidney transplantation successfully into a child
  • Our renal team spearheaded the use of da Vinci technology in the UK to undertake full kidney transplants and perform keyhole surgery to implant donor kidneys in patients
  • One of the first three centres in the UK to have a laparoscopic (key-hole) donor programme.

Kidney transplants
Our renal unit’s expertise in adult and paediatric complex cases means we can provide transplants for many patients for whom transplantation would otherwise be impossible. It is supported by a network of specialists in living donation, cardiology, urology, infectious disease and pharmacology.

The living donor transplantation programme is one of the largest, most active in the UK and one of the most successful in Europe, with a one-year graft survival rate of 98%.

Our paediatric renal service is also the largest in Europe. We operate from Evelina London Children’s Hospital and provide blood group compatible kidney transplants for private patients. In addition, we specialise in managing complex nephrotic syndrome, reno-vascular patients and transplant urology for adolescents.

Clinical expertise in specialist renal services
Our multidisciplinary approach assures private patients of excellent clinical care from dedicated expert teams working together to provide personalised care at every stage of treatment or surgery.

The multidisciplinary team include renowned consultants, such as transplant surgeons, urological surgeons and nephrologists who look after all renal conditions and are supported by nurses and specialists with extraordinary knowledge and expertise in complex care.

The renal team can call on multiple resources, including intensive care, diagnostic and interventional radiological support, and microbiological expertise under one NHS Trust. They have access to the latest treatments for patients at every stage of life, from before birth through childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

Vascular access
Our surgeons perform many vascular access operations, including standard arteriovenous fistulae, complex grafts and revision surgeries supported by an expert interventional radiology service. We also provide an outstanding paediatric vascular access service to children in London and beyond who require haemodialysis and other therapies. Our consultants are involved in several national studies at the frontiers of dialysis access and novel approaches such as endovascular fistula formation.

International patients’ team
Our friendly international patients’ team are dedicated to providing tailored support for each patient. With on-site Arabic speakers, our team offer translation and language support to ensure that the patient’s cultural, religious and language needs are met. The team also liaise with embassies and health offices to oversee all aspects of the patient’s treatment ensuring high standards of care throughout the patient’s stay.
